The work sits in companies of every size, in CA firms, and in government departments and public-sector companies, which fill their accounts posts through open recruitment. Most of the figures on this page come from those public notices; one comes from a private employer at ICMAI's campus.
How people enter it
A commerce degree
Most accountant posts ask for a B.Com. The Eklavya schools' Accountant post on this page asks for it outright; the EPFO post is open to any graduate.
The working tools
Accounting software, spreadsheets, GST returns and TDS returns are what employers test in practice. No licence is needed to work as an accountant.
Government and PSU routes
Central government accounts posts are filled through the SSC Combined Graduate Level examination: Junior Accountant and Accountant, and Assistant Accounts Officer. AAI and POWERGRID advertise their own posts.
A professional course
CA or CMA Intermediate moves an accountant towards officer grades. POWERGRID's Junior Officer Trainee (F&A) post is open to Inter CA and Inter CMA candidates, not to full CAs or CMAs.

How the figure is read
MIS Accountant: "CTC range of 6-9 LPA" as stated; the low end ₹6 lakh is the figure, ₹9 lakh the band top. CTC as stated by the recruiter in its job description for ICMAI's June 2026 term campus. A stated CTC, not basic pay; it may include variable pay and benefits as the employer defines them. The description asks for CA Inter or CMA Inter, though it was posted at a campus for newly qualified CMAs.

Junior Officer Trainee (F&A): basic ₹24,000 per month during the one-year training (S0, ₹24,000–1,08,000 IDA) × 12 as the figure; band to ₹25,000 × 12, the start of the S1 scale (₹25,000–1,17,500 IDA) on absorption as Junior Officer Gr-IV. The advertisement puts the annual CTC at about ₹12.7 lakh.

Qualification: Inter or full CA and CMA move the same work into officer grades.

Is that the take-home pay?
No. A figure given as basic pay leaves out dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other allowances paid on top of it, and it is before income tax and provident fund or NPS deductions. A figure given as cost to company (CTC) includes the employer's contributions and any variable pay, so monthly take-home is lower than CTC divided by twelve. Which exam leads to a government accountant job?
The SSC Combined Graduate Level examination fills Junior Accountant and Accountant posts (pay level 5) and Assistant Accounts Officer posts (pay level 8) in central government offices. EPFO recruits through UPSC, and PSUs such as AAI and POWERGRID advertise their own accounts posts.
