Agriculture / Agronomist

Agriculture professionals work on crops, soil, water and farm finance. Agronomists advise growers, bank field officers assess farm loans, and researchers develop new varieties and practices.

Read this first. This page rests on one dated pay figure from a named source. That is evidence of what that source states, not of what Agriculture / Agronomist roles pay across India.

What the work is

Employers include State agriculture departments, agricultural universities and research institutes, seed, fertiliser and food companies, and the banks that lend to farmers. The figure on this page is the banks' route.

How people enter it

  1. A four-year degree

IBPS asks Agricultural Field Officer candidates for a four-year degree in agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, veterinary science, dairy, fishery, forestry, agricultural engineering, food technology or a related subject listed in its notice.

  2. Public sector banks

IBPS recruits Agricultural Field Officers (Scale I) for 11 banks through its Specialist Officer process: a preliminary exam, a main exam and an interview. The age limit is 20 to 30.

  3. Research

The Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board recruits scientists for ICAR institutes, usually after a master's degree or PhD.

  4. State services

State public service commissions recruit agriculture officers for their own departments.

What changes the pay

Questions

What do the Agriculture / Agronomist posts on this page pay?

11 public sector banks (via IBPS), Agricultural Field Officer, Scale I: Basic pay × 12: ₹48,480 per month (scale to ₹85,920), recorded here as ₹5,81,760 a year (IBPS CRP SPL-XVI (vacancies of 2027-28)).

Is that the take-home pay?

No. A figure given as basic pay leaves out dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other allowances paid on top of it, and it is before income tax and provident fund or NPS deductions. The CTC breakup calculator on this site works out a monthly in-hand figure from a CTC.

How does a bank recruit an Agricultural Field Officer?

Through the IBPS Common Recruitment Process for Specialist Officers: an online preliminary exam, an online main exam and an interview conducted by the participating banks. Successful candidates join at Scale I.
