Income tax calculator: the questions people ask

Is this income tax calculator free?

Yes. It is a free income tax calculator for FY 2026-27, which the Income-tax Act, 2025 calls tax year 2026-27: no sign-up, and the figures you type stay in your browser. It shows the tax under both regimes, and you can share the result as a link or a PDF.

How is income tax calculated in the new regime for FY 2026-27?

On taxable income after the ₹75,000 standard deduction for salary or pension: nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 lakh to ₹8 lakh, 10% to ₹12 lakh, 15% to ₹16 lakh, 20% to ₹20 lakh, 25% to ₹24 lakh and 30% above, under section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. A rebate under section 156 (formerly 87A) cancels the tax, up to ₹60,000, when taxable income is ₹12 lakh or less. Surcharge, if any, and 4% cess come on top.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?

Yes, through the rebate: taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pays no tax, so a salaried person with the ₹75,000 standard deduction pays none on a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from exceeding the income above ₹12 lakh. Capital gains taxed at their own rates are treated differently; the advanced income tax calculator covers them.

Which is the best income tax calculator for FY 2026-27?

Look for one that applies the Income-tax Act, 2025 for tax year 2026-27, puts the old and new regimes side by side, and shows the rebate, surcharge with marginal relief and 4% cess line by line, so each figure can be checked. This calculator does all of that, built by a Chartered Accountant. It covers a resident individual with salary, house property and other income; for capital gains, use the advanced income tax calculator.

Which regime is better for me, old or new?

It depends on your deductions. The new regime has lower slab rates but allows almost no deductions; the old regime allows HRA, section 80C (now section 123), 80D, home loan interest and the rest. Enter your income and deductions once and the calculator shows the tax under both, side by side, and which costs less.

Does the calculator include surcharge and cess?

Yes. Surcharge starts above ₹50 lakh of income, with marginal relief at each threshold, and the new regime caps it at 25%. Health and education cess of 4% is added on the tax and surcharge.
