Actuary / Actuarial Analyst

An actuary measures financial risk with statistics: pricing insurance policies, setting the reserves an insurer must hold, valuing pension and gratuity liabilities, and advising on capital.

Read this first. This page rests on one dated pay figure from a named source. That is evidence of what that source states, not of what Actuary / Actuarial Analyst roles pay across India.

What the work is

In India most actuarial work is with life, general and health insurers, reinsurers, consulting firms and pension funds. Every insurer must have an Appointed Actuary under IRDAI's regulations, so the profession is tied closely to insurance.

How people enter it

  1. The entrance test

The Institute of Actuaries of India admits students through its Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET).

  2. The professional papers

Students then pass the institute's papers one at a time, usually while working as actuarial analysts. Qualifying as a Fellow takes several years.

  3. Insurers

Insurers hire actuarial students into their actuarial teams. LIC recruits Assistant Administrative Officers (Actuarial) through its specialist notice, the figure on this page.

Questions

What do the Actuary / Actuarial Analyst posts on this page pay?

Life Insurance Corporation of India, AAO (Actuarial): Basic pay × 12: ₹88,635 per month (total ≈ ₹1,26,000 in an A-class city), recorded here as ₹10,63,620 a year (LIC AAO (Specialist) / AE, 32nd Batch, notified 16.08.2025).

Is that the take-home pay?

No. A figure given as basic pay leaves out dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other allowances paid on top of it, and it is before income tax and provident fund or NPS deductions. The CTC breakup calculator on this site works out a monthly in-hand figure from a CTC.

How do I start the actuarial course in India?

Register with the Institute of Actuaries of India and pass its Actuarial Common Entrance Test (ACET). After that, the institute's papers are taken one at a time, and most students work while they study.
