Cost & Management Accountant

A cost and management accountant works out what products and services cost, builds budgets and variance reports, and supports pricing and planning decisions. In industry the title is often finance officer or management accountant.

What the work is

Cost accountants in practice also conduct cost audits, which section 148 of the Companies Act, 2013 requires of companies in specified industries above set turnover limits. The profession is regulated by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI). Most figures on this page are job descriptions recruiters filed at ICMAI's campus in October 2026.

    ICMAI's course runs Foundation, Intermediate and Final; graduates can enter at Intermediate.

  2. Training

    Practical training is part of the course before membership.

Is that the take-home pay?

No. A figure given as basic pay leaves out dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other allowances paid on top of it, and it is before income tax and provident fund or NPS deductions. A figure given as cost to company (CTC) includes the employer's contributions and any variable pay, so monthly take-home is lower than CTC divided by twelve. The CTC breakup calculator on this site works out a monthly in-hand figure from a CTC.

What is a cost audit?

An audit of a company's cost records by a cost accountant in practice. Section 148 of the Companies Act, 2013 and the Companies (Cost Records and Audit) Rules, 2014 require it for companies in listed industries above set turnover limits.
