What the work is
Most guards in India are employed through private security agencies, which need a licence from the State government under the Private Security Agencies (Regulation) Act, 2005. Banks and public-sector companies also recruit guards directly, often only from ex-servicemen. The figure on this page is such a post: Security Guard at Indian Overseas Bank, recruited from ex-servicemen and ex-Agniveers for Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
How people enter it
Through a licensed agency
Private security agencies hire and train guards and place them with clients; the 2005 Act requires an agency to hold a State licence and to train the guards it deploys.
Bank and PSU posts for ex-servicemen
Public-sector banks such as Indian Overseas Bank recruit security guards directly from ex-servicemen and ex-Agniveers. IOB's selection is an online objective test, a Tamil language test and a physical fitness test.
Basic eligibility
IOB's notice asks for a pass in Class 10, rules out graduates, and requires the candidate to speak, read and write Tamil; character must be exemplary at discharge from the forces.
Supervisor and officer roles
Experience and supervisory training lead to supervisor posts; security officer posts in companies usually ask for a degree or service as an officer in the forces.
What the pay figures say
One dated figure is on file. It comes from an employer's own notice. It took effect on 25 August 2026. Each card says what the figure is; open "How the figure is read" for the method and what it leaves out.
Indian Overseas Bank · Security Guard, subordinate staff (12th Bipartite Settlement)₹2,34,000 a year
Security Guard scale start × 12 (IOB) 25 Security Guard posts for ex-servicemen and ex-Agniveers, Chennai and Tamil Nadu
Employer noticeIOB Advt. No. HRMD/SS/RECT/01/2026-27 · effective 25 August 2026
How the figure is read
Security Guard, subordinate-staff cadre (12th Bipartite Settlement); scale start ₹19,500 per month × 12. The scale runs to ₹37,815; the start of the scale × 12, excluding DA, HRA and other allowances.
Limits. Start of the scale only: the bank fixes an ex-serviceman's basic on the last pay drawn in the forces, so many recruits start higher. DA, HRA and other allowances excluded. One public-sector bank; guards hired through private agencies are paid at least the minimum wage, not this scale.
Employer: a direct post with a bank or public-sector company pays on a fixed scale with allowances; agency pay depends on the client contract and must meet the minimum wage.
Ex-servicemen status: IOB fixes an ex-serviceman's starting basic on the last pay drawn in the forces, so many recruits start above the bottom of the scale shown here.
Duty: armed (gunman) posts, night shifts and supervisory work usually pay more than an unarmed day post.
Questions
What do the Security Guard / Supervisor posts on this page pay?
Indian Overseas Bank, Security Guard, subordinate staff (12th Bipartite Settlement): Security Guard scale start × 12 (IOB), recorded here as ₹2,34,000 a year (IOB Advt. No. HRMD/SS/RECT/01/2026-27).
Does the minimum wage apply to security guards?
Yes. Security work is covered by minimum wages: the central government fixes rates for establishments in its sphere and each State fixes its own, by area and skill, and revises them from time to time. A guard hired through an agency must be paid at least the applicable rate. This page does not print those rates; its figure is one bank's pay scale.
Start of the scale only: the bank fixes an ex-serviceman's basic on the last pay drawn in the forces, so many recruits start higher. DA, HRA and other allowances excluded. One public-sector bank; guards hired through private agencies are paid at least the minimum wage, not this scale.
