What the work is
Employers range from chip-design and electronics manufacturing companies to telecom operators, defence and space organisations, and public-sector companies. The two figures on this page are public routes: an SSC Junior Engineer and a Coal India Management Trainee (Electronics & Telecommunication).
How people enter it
A degree or a diploma
A B.E. or B.Tech in electronics and communication engineering. A diploma is enough for many Junior Engineer posts; the notice for each department lists the exact qualification.
SSC Junior Engineer
The SSC Junior Engineer examination fills JE posts in central government departments at pay level 6.
UPSC Engineering Services
UPSC's Engineering Services Examination fills the Group A engineering services of the central government.
Public-sector companies
Many PSUs recruit engineering trainees on GATE scores; others, such as Coal India, run their own computer-based test for Management Trainees.
What the pay figures say
Two dated figures are on file. Both come from employers' own notices. The latest took effect on 2 September 2026. Each card says what the figure is; open "How the figure is read" for the method and what it leaves out.

Limits. Government junior engineer cadre only — says nothing about private-sector engineering pay. Basic pay only.
Field: chip design, embedded systems, telecom and manufacturing each have their own employers.
A master's degree (M.Tech in VLSI or microelectronics) is common for chip-design roles.
Employer: public-sector posts follow fixed grades; private pay is set by the company.
Questions
What do the Electronics / VLSI Engineer posts on this page pay?
Government of India (via SSC), Junior Engineer (Telecom) (L6): Basic pay × 12: ₹35,400 per month (Level 6), recorded here as ₹4,24,800 a year (SSC Junior Engineer Examination 2026). Coal India Limited, Management Trainee (Electronics & Telecommunication), E-1: Basic pay × 12: ₹60,000 per month (E-1, IDA), recorded here as ₹7,20,000 a year (Coal India Advt. 03/2026, Management Trainees (CBT-26)).
Is that the take-home pay?
No. A figure given as basic pay leaves out dearness allowance, house rent allowance and the other allowances paid on top of it, and it is before income tax and provident fund or NPS deductions. The CTC breakup calculator on this site works out a monthly in-hand figure from a CTC.
Does this page show VLSI or chip-design pay?
No. The two figures on file are public-sector posts. Chip-design companies set their own pay and have not published figures this site can cite.
Roles in Engineering (core) first, then the rest of the covered set. Listed so a comparison is one click away — no role is ranked above another, and a role appears here only when it has sourced observations of its own.
