RD: the questions people ask
How is RD maturity calculated?
Each monthly instalment earns interest compounded every quarter for the months it is in. ₹5,000 a month for five years in a Post Office RD at 6.7% for October to December 2026 puts in ₹3,00,000 and matures at about ₹3,56,829. The same formula reproduces the maturity values printed in the Post Office RD Scheme, to the paisa.
Is this RD calculator free?
Yes. It is a free RD calculator: no sign-up, and the figures you type stay in your browser. It works a Post Office RD and a bank RD by their own rules and sets them side by side after tax. You can share the result as a link or a PDF.
Post Office RD or bank RD: which pays more?
At today’s rates the Post Office RD pays 6.7%, compounded quarterly, against SBI’s 6.05% for 5 years: ₹3,56,829 against ₹3,50,778 on ₹5,000 a month. The Post Office RD runs only five years (it can be extended for five more); a bank RD can run from 1 to 10 years.
What is the Post Office RD interest rate now?
6.7% a year for October to December 2026, compounded quarterly, unchanged since 1 January 2024. An RD keeps the rate of the period in which it was opened.
Is RD interest taxable?
Yes. RD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab in the year it is earned, even though it is paid at maturity; the calculator counts it that way. A bank deducts 10% TDS once interest crosses ₹50,000 in a year (₹1 lakh for a senior citizen), under section 393(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (formerly 194A).
Can an RD be closed early?
A Post Office RD can be closed after three years, at the 4% savings rate, and half the balance can be withdrawn after a year. At SBI an RD closed early earns 0.50% less than the rate for the time it ran, and six missed instalments close it.
