Jio Shares After Listing: The First Results, the Lock-in Calendar and the Tax If You Sell

Jio Platforms closed its third trading day at ₹1,431.30, 27.9% above the ₹1,119 issue price, and reported its first results as a listed company the same evening: profit up 13.7% to ₹8,387 crore. For the lakhs who now hold the shares, three things matter next. Only 2.2% of Jio's shares can be traded today, and the lock-ins lift in stages from 25 November, with a far larger block in April 2027. Selling within 12 months costs 20% of the gain, after it 12.5%, with the first ₹1.25 lakh of gains tax-free. The numbers from NSE and Jio's own filings, worked for one lot and for fourteen, with no tip either way.

Jio Platforms listed on 28 October 2026 at ₹1,358, 21.4% above its issue price of ₹1,119, and closed its third day of trading, Friday 30 October, at ₹1,431.30. That evening it filed its first results as a listed company. If you hold the shares, from the IPO or bought since, the questions now are different from the ones on allotment day: what the results say, how many more shares can come on to the market and when, and what tax you pay if you sell now or wait. This guide answers each from NSE's data and Jio's own filings. It does not tell you to buy, hold or sell.

Written on Saturday 31 October 2026. Prices are NSE's closing prices; the results are those Jio filed with the exchanges at 7 pm on 30 October, after trading had ended, so Monday 2 November is the first session to react to them. The lock-in dates and share counts are from NSE's listing circular of 27 October. Tax figures are for a resident individual under the Income-tax Act, 2025, with 4% cess and no surcharge. This is not investment advice.

Jio after listing, in six numbers

₹1,431.30 — the close on 30 October, up 27.9% on ₹1,119 · ₹13.18 lakh crore — the market value of all 920.90 crore shares at that price · ₹8,387 crore — profit for July to September, up 13.7% · 2.2% — of Jio's shares free to trade today · 25 November — when the first block of anchor shares can be sold · 20% or 12.5% — the tax on the gain, depending on whether you sell within or after 12 months.

The first three trading days

Fri 30 Oct₹1,410.10₹1,439.90₹1,386.80₹1,431.302.45 crore

On one lot of 12 shares, bought for ₹13,428 in the IPO, the close on 30 October is worth ₹17,175.60, a paper gain of ₹3,747.60 before costs and tax. The swing on 29 October, from ₹1,489.70 to ₹1,381, shows how much the price moves while so few shares are available to trade, a point the lock-in table below explains. Volumes fell by more than half each day as the listing-day trading settled.

What the first results as a listed company say

Jio's board approved results for July to September 2026, the second quarter of 2026-27, on 30 October.

Consolidated, ₹ croreJul–Sep 2026Jul–Sep 2025Change
Revenue from operations40,47536,332+11.4%
EBITDA (operating profit)21,87918,757+16.6%
EBITDA margin54.1%51.6%+2.5 points
Profit after tax8,3877,375+13.7%
Basic earnings per share₹9.38₹8.25+13.7%
Average revenue per user (ARPU), a month₹218.8₹211.4+3.5%
Customers542.4 million506.4 million+36 million

Three points from the release stand out for a shareholder. Profit grew more slowly than operating profit, which the company attributes to higher finance costs after its 5G network was capitalised in March 2026. Of the IPO money, ₹27,500 crore has already gone to repaying external commercial borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, its main subsidiary, and the rest is for general corporate purposes, as the prospectus set out. And the 5G base crossed 300 million users, with fixed broadband above 30 million.

What the price implies

At ₹1,431.30, all 920.90 crore Jio shares are worth about ₹13.18 lakh crore; at the ₹1,119 issue price they were worth ₹10.30 lakh crore. Earnings per share for the last twelve months, from the company's own figures, come to ₹35.49 (₹33.63 for 2025-26, less ₹16.21 for its first half, plus ₹18.07 for the first half of 2026-27). That puts the price at about 40.3 times trailing earnings, against about 31.5 times at the issue price.

Two cautions on that multiple. These per-share figures are on the 893.90 crore shares in issue before the IPO; the 27 crore new shares add about 3% to the count, so future earnings per share will be spread over more shares. And a multiple says nothing by itself about whether a price is high or low; it is a starting point for comparing Jio with its own growth and with other listed companies.

Who owns Jio now

Reliance Industries holds 593.78 crore shares, or 64.48%. The remaining 35.52% is held by 79,62,550 public shareholders. That public figure includes the large pre-IPO investors, such as Meta's Jaadhu Holdings and Google International, which under shareholder agreements may each nominate a director, as well as the IPO's anchor investors and every allottee and buyer since listing.

The lock-in calendar: when more shares can be sold

Most of Jio's shares cannot yet be sold. NSE's listing circular lists each block by distinctive number with the date its lock-in ends:

BlockSharesLocked untilFree to trade from
IPO shares other than anchors, and a small free block20.09 croreNot lockedNow
Anchor investors, first half3.62 crore24 Nov 202625 Nov 2026
Anchor investors, second half3.62 crore23 Jan 202724 Jan 2027
Pre-IPO shareholders other than Reliance299.78 crore26 Apr 202727 Apr 2027
Reliance Industries409.40 crore26 Oct 202727 Oct 2027
Reliance Industries, promoter's minimum contribution184.39 crore26 Oct 202927 Oct 2029

Today's free float is about 2.2% of Jio's equity. The first anchor tranche adds 18% to it, which is why its end on 24 November will be watched. The block that matters most is April 2027: 299.78 crore shares, about fifteen times today's free float. A lock-in ending does not mean the shares will be sold, only that they can be. Some pre-IPO holders are strategic partners and others are investment funds, and each will decide for itself. The end of a lock-in is a date to know, not a forecast.

If you sell: the tax

Jio's shares are listed and sold on an exchange with securities transaction tax paid, so they fall under the special rates of the Income-tax Act, 2025:

When you sellHow the gain is taxedSection
Within 12 months of allotment or purchaseShort-term: 20%, plus cess196
After 12 monthsLong-term: 12.5%, plus cess, on the part of your total long-term gains on listed shares and equity funds above ₹1.25 lakh in the tax year197 and 198

The 12-month line comes from section 2(101), which treats a listed security held for more than 12 months as a long-term asset. Jio's IPO shares were allotted on or about 26 October 2026, so a sale on or after 28 October 2027 is safely long-term. Your cost is the price you paid: ₹1,119 for an IPO allottee, or your purchase price if you bought on the exchange.

Worked at the 30 October close of ₹1,431.30 (a gain of ₹312.30 a share; 4% cess included; brokerage and exchange charges ignored):

Shares heldGainTax if sold within 12 monthsTax if sold after 12 months, no other long-term gains that year
12 (one lot)₹3,747.60₹779.50Nil
168 (fourteen lots, the retail maximum)₹52,466.40₹10,913.01Nil
500₹1,56,150₹32,479.20₹4,049.50 (on ₹31,150 above the ₹1.25 lakh limit)

At the same price, waiting for a year turns a tax of ₹779.50 on one lot into nothing, as long as your long-term gains for the year stay within ₹1.25 lakh. Whether that is worth waiting for depends on what the price does in the meantime, which no one can tell you. Employees who bought in the employee quota at a discount should take advice, as their cost and tax position can differ. Higher incomes also pay surcharge.

Holding the shares: the practical points

  • Where they are. IPO shares were credited to demat accounts on 27 October under the ISIN INE0BJO01010. The monthly consolidated account statement from NSDL or CDSL shows them alongside your other holdings.
  • Dividends. Jio has not declared a dividend. Any future dividend is taxed at your slab rate, with tax deducted above the threshold.
  • The next dates. Monday 2 November, the first session after the results; 25 November, the first anchor unlock; Jio's results for October to December, due by mid-February under the listing rules; and any announcement from NSE Indices or BSE on adding Jio to a benchmark index, which has not been made.

Hold or sell: questions to ask yourself

This is not advice, and the answer differs from one holder to the next. These are the questions that decide it:

  1. Why did you apply? For a listing gain, for long-term ownership, or because everyone was? The answer changes what a good outcome is.
  2. How much of your savings is now in one stock? For most retail allottees it is one lot, a small share; for some shareholders in the Reliance quota it may be much larger.
  3. Does the tax line matter to you? On small gains, waiting past 12 months can make the tax nil; on large gains it changes 20% into 12.5%.
  4. Have you looked at the supply calendar? 25 November, 24 January and above all 27 April 2027 can bring sellers; they may not.
  5. Do you need the money in the next year? Money you need soon is better not left in any single stock.
