Gold Mutual Funds Stopped New Investments: What Happens to Your SIP, and Can You Still Buy a Gold ETF?
Every gold fund of funds in India has stopped taking new money, and nobody has said when that ends. If you already hold one, your units, your SIP and your right to sell are intact. If you wanted to start one, the door is shut, but gold ETFs are still on the exchange and, on the data so far, cost no more than before. Here is what the fund houses' own notices say, what is confirmed about the reason and what is not, and how long earlier pauses lasted.
On the evening of 15 October 2026, fund house after fund house put out the same short notice: no new money into their gold funds. Nearly three weeks later, with Dhanteras days away, none has reopened. If you already hold a gold fund, you have lost nothing. Your units are safe, your SIP keeps running and you can sell whenever you like. If you wanted to start one, that door is shut for now. Here is exactly what changed, and what you can still do.
Written on 4 November 2026. I read 15 fund houses' notices in full. The other 10 are reported by Value Research, CNBC-TV18 or Upstox. The scheme list is AMFI's, the open-or-closed check is from Groww's fund pages on 4 November, and the ETF prices are from NSE and AMFI. Fund houses can change these terms at any time. This is not investment advice.
Stopped: lump sums, switch-ins, new SIPs and new STPs into gold funds of funds · Still working: existing SIPs, existing STPs and redemptions · Still open: gold ETFs on the exchange and silver-only funds · Reason: almost no notice gives one, and SEBI has published no circular · ETF price: no premium so far · Reopening: no date from anyone
What has stopped and what has not
A gold fund of funds (FoF) is a mutual fund that puts your money into a gold ETF. You can buy it without a demat account, which is why many small investors use it. The pause is on these funds, not on gold ETFs themselves.
| What you want to do | Gold fund of funds now |
|---|---|
| Invest a lump sum, new or additional | Stopped |
| Switch in from another fund | Stopped |
| Start a new SIP | Stopped |
| Start a new STP into the gold fund | Stopped |
| Raise an existing SIP by top-up or step-up | Stopped in 9 of the 15 notices I read; the other 6 do not stop it in clear words, so ask your fund house |
| Keep an existing SIP or STP running | Continues |
| Redeem, or switch out | Continues; none of the 15 notices restricts it |
| Start a withdrawal plan (SWP) | Continues; Invesco, HSBC and Zerodha say so in their notices |
Money sent after the cut-off is refunded. HSBC says within 5 business days, and Motilal Oswal says without interest. Both Direct and Regular plans are covered.
Which funds are closed
Most reports say 17 fund houses. The true number is higher. AMFI's scheme list of 3 November has 30 gold and gold-and-silver funds of funds, from 25 fund houses. I checked each one on Groww's public fund pages on 4 November, and all 30 show as closed to lump sums and SIPs. Each of the 25 fund houses has also published a notice or been reported as stopping. The count leaves out two overseas gold-mining funds from DSP and Kotak, which hold company shares rather than gold.

Silver is a different story. Some headlines said gold and silver funds had both stopped. Only funds holding both metals have. All 16 silver-only funds of funds showed as open on Groww on 4 November. So did the two multi-asset funds I checked as a control, from ICICI Prudential and SBI.
What happens to your SIP
Instalments registered before the cut-off go through at the day's NAV, as usual. You do not need to do anything.
A cancelled SIP needs a fresh registration, and fresh registrations are refused. The same goes for a SIP that lapses or reaches its end date. If you plan to keep investing, keep the mandate alive and the bank balance sufficient.
Invesco says that when it reopens, your SIP base will be the 15 October amount, with no rises added for the pause. Other notices are silent on this, so ask yours.
Switching into any closed gold fund is blocked, even from another gold fund. Switching between plans of the same scheme is allowed at Invesco and HSBC. Ask your fund house before assuming the same elsewhere.
Why it happened: what is confirmed and what is not
Many pages say SEBI ordered this. The paper trail is thinner than that.
| Claim | What I found |
|---|---|
| The notices give a reason | None of the 15 I read does. Several say only that "it has been decided" |
| A SEBI instruction lay behind it | Likely, not documented. CNBC-TV18 reports that Shriram's notice cites SEBI instructions conveyed through AMFI. Reuters, as carried by other outlets, cites a fund executive and two bullion officials on a nudge from SEBI, which did not comment |
| SEBI issued a circular | No such circular or press release appears in SEBI's listing for "gold" on 4 November |
| DSP's notice cites SEBI | Some web pages say so. The copy on DSP's website does not |
| It is about the rupee and imports | A widely held reading, not an official statement |
The background does point that way. The Prime Minister asked people on 10 May not to buy gold for a year. Import duty went from 6% to 15% on 13 May. In June, fund houses capped gold fund purchases at ₹10 lakh per PAN a month and stopped direct ETF purchases of ₹25 crore or more, and HDFC's addendum cited only "broader economic and market conditions". HDFC, Axis and Tata lifted their limits in August. The rupee was still near 95 to the dollar in mid-October.
Yet imports had already fallen. Gold imports were $1.8 billion in September, down 81% on a year earlier, and $19.27 billion for April to September, down 27%. A trader at a bank that supplies gold to ETFs called the move a precaution against a sudden rise in October imports. A fund manager told Business Today it felt like a soft signal to stay away from gold.
Why funds of funds, and not ETFs? A fund of funds has to pass every new rupee to its ETF, which in turn has to hold more gold, and India imports its gold. An ETF bought on the exchange usually comes from another holder, so no new gold is needed. Shutting the fund route slows the demand that turns straight into imports. It is a logical reading of how the plumbing works, not a stated reason. Gold ETFs held about ₹1.86 lakh crore on 30 September, and took in ₹4,451 crore that month. AMFI's October figure was not out when I wrote this.
Have gold ETFs become costlier? The data so far
This is the real risk for anyone moving to an ETF. When buyers crowd in and new units cannot be made fast enough, an ETF can trade above the value of the gold it holds, its NAV. In October 2025, silver ETFs traded at premiums of 5% to 10% for five sessions. So I compared the NSE closing price with the same day's NAV for six large gold ETFs, from 1 September to 3 November.
| Gold ETF | Average premium before the halt | Average premium after | Highest after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nippon India ETF Gold BeES | 0.11% | 0.02% | 0.26% |
| HDFC Gold ETF | 0.16% | 0.03% | 0.30% |
| ICICI Prudential Gold ETF | 0.11% | 0.00% | 0.28% |
| Kotak Gold ETF | 0.10% | −0.01% | 0.27% |
| SBI Gold ETF | 0.15% | −0.03% | 0.22% |
| UTI Gold ETF | 0.17% | 0.01% | 0.22% |
| All six | 0.13% | 0.01% | 0.30% |
"Before" is 31 trading days to 15 October; "after" is 12 trading days from 16 October. The premium went down, not up. Trading did not surge either: the six traded about ₹471 crore a day on NSE after the halt, against ₹493 crore before. Money shut out of the funds has not rushed to the exchange so far. Gold's own fall may be part of the reason: Gold BeES dropped 6% from 15 October to 3 November, before jumping about 3% on 4 November.
Two cautions. A closing price and a NAV are not struck at the same moment, so small gaps either way are normal. And 12 days is a short record, with the Dhanteras rush still to come. One door has already narrowed: UTI restricted direct purchases above ₹25 crore in its Gold ETF from 21 October, the same limit used in June. That route is for large investors, not for you, but it is one of the ways extra supply reaches the market. So check before you buy. The fund house shows an indicative NAV during market hours, and NSE's ETF page shows the last NAV. If the price is clearly above it, you are paying for something you do not get.
Your options now
| Route | Open? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gold ETF on the exchange | Yes | Needs a demat account. You pay the live price plus brokerage. Long-term after 12 months |
| Your existing gold fund SIP | Yes | Runs as it is. You cannot add to it |
| Multi-asset fund | Yes, in the two I checked | Gold is only a part of it, along with shares and debt. It is not the same thing |
| Sovereign Gold Bond on the exchange | Yes | No new issues. A buyer on the exchange is taxed on the gain at maturity |
| Coin or bar | Yes | 3% GST and a seller's premium. A gift card can cut the real cost |
| Silver fund of funds | Yes | Not a stand-in. It is a different metal that has fallen much further |
| Digital gold | Yes | Outside SEBI's oversight, as SEBI itself has warned |
If you have no demat account, opening one is the main step between you and an ETF. Some brokers offer a recurring order on ETFs that works much like a SIP. Ask yours about its charges, because small monthly orders can suffer from a minimum brokerage.
Should you sell your gold fund and buy an ETF instead?
You do not have to, and a hurried move can cost you twice. A fund of funds is unlisted, so it turns long-term only after 24 months. An ETF is listed, so it does after 12. That is a real advantage for new money, but selling your fund to get it is a taxable sale, and the ETF's clock starts from zero.
Gold does not get the ₹1.25 lakh yearly exemption that shares and equity funds get, and there is no indexation. Check for an exit load too. And remember that this is a one-way door for now: once you sell, you cannot buy the fund back until it reopens. Work out your own numbers in the capital gains calculator.
How long could this last?
Nobody has said. Most notices say "until further notice". Three of them, from ICICI Prudential, Aditya Birla Sun Life and Motilal Oswal, say "discontinued" and do not use the word temporary. Earlier pauses are the only guide, and their causes differed.
| Pause | Cause | Closed | Reopened | Lasted |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reliance Gold Savings Fund, now Nippon India Gold Savings Fund | Rupee crisis and government efforts to curb gold demand | 1 Aug 2013 | 23 Oct 2013 | About 12 weeks |
| Overseas mutual funds | Industry nearing its $7 billion limit | Late Jan 2022 | June 2022 | About 5 months |
| Silver funds of funds | Silver shortage and ETF premiums | Mid-Oct 2025 | From 20 Oct 2025 | About 2 weeks |
| Gold fund caps (₹10 lakh a month) | "Broader economic and market conditions" | June 2026 | 14–21 Aug 2026 | About 10 weeks |
| This pause | Not stated | 15–16 Oct 2026 | Not yet | Nearly 3 weeks so far |
The 2013 case is the closest match: the same fund, and the same worry about the rupee. It reopened after the rupee recovered and the trade deficit narrowed. That does not mean the same will happen now, but it tells you what to watch: the rupee, the monthly import figures from the Commerce Ministry, AMFI's monthly data, and your own fund house's notices page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has SEBI banned gold mutual funds? No ban has been published. Fund houses paused new money through their own notices. Reports say this followed SEBI's instructions, but SEBI's site shows no circular on it as of 4 November.
Is my money in a gold fund safe? The pause does not touch your units. They still track the price of gold, and you can redeem them. The value will rise and fall with gold, as before.
Will my existing gold fund SIP stop? No. SIPs registered before the cut-off continue. Do not cancel one unless you are sure, because you cannot register a new one for now.
Can I increase my SIP in a gold fund? Most fund houses have stopped top-ups and step-ups. Nine of the 15 notices I read say so. Check yours.
Are gold ETFs stopped too? No. Anyone with a demat account can buy them on the exchange. UTI has restricted direct purchases above ₹25 crore in its Gold ETF, but that does not affect exchange buying.
Are silver funds stopped? Silver-only funds of funds are open: all 16 showed as open on 4 November. Funds holding both gold and silver are closed.
When will gold funds reopen? No date has been given. Earlier pauses lasted from two weeks to five months.
Is a gold ETF better than a gold fund? They suit different people. An ETF needs a demat account, but it turns long-term after 12 months and avoids a second layer of fees. A fund needs no demat account and allows an easy SIP, when it is open. Which is right depends on your situation.
Does this change the price of gold? Not directly. Indian prices follow world prices, the rupee and import duty.
Fund house terms can change without notice; read your own fund's latest notice before acting. The tax example assumes a 30% slab and no surcharge. Educational explanation only: not investment, tax or legal advice, and not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold gold in any form.
