Buying Gold With Gift Cards: How to Save at Tanishq, Kalyan and Reliance Jewels, and the Rules That Catch People Out
Pay a jeweller with its own gift card, bought online at a discount, and you cut your real cost without touching the bill. On 4 November 2026 gold cards were listed at about 2% to 4% off. But a jewellery card usually will not buy coins, the discount can shrink if you pay by credit card, and many banks pay no rewards on gift cards or jewellery. Here is which card buys what, what each way of paying saves on a ₹1 lakh bill, and the rules printed in the small print.
If you have already decided to buy jewellery, a coin or a bar from a big jeweller, there is a simple way to pay less. Do not pay the whole bill from your bank or card at the counter. Buy the jeweller's own gift card online at a discount, then hand it over at billing. The jeweller takes it at full value, the bill does not change, and the discount stays with you. I used this on 3 November 2026 for a gold bar at Kalyan: the store's discount on making charges, a discounted gift card and 1% cashback on my credit card, all on one purchase. It works, but the small print decides how much you really save.
Written on 4 November 2026. Discounts are as listed on Amazon and Woohoo that day and change without notice, so check them again before you buy. GyFTR's site was closed for maintenance that day, and CRED and Paytm show their rates inside their apps, so their rates are not in this guide. Gift card terms are from each card's own page. This guide is about how to pay for gold you have already chosen to buy. It is not advice to buy gold, or to buy from any brand or seller.
2% to 4% — listed discount on gold gift cards · 3% or 1% — the same Tanishq card on Woohoo, by UPI or by credit card · Match the card — a jewellery card usually refuses coins · Use it fully — most cards work once, and the balance is lost · 6 to 12 months — how long the cards last · Check your bank — many credit cards pay nothing on gift cards or jewellery.
How a gift card saves money on gold
A jeweller's gift card is prepaid value that only that jeweller accepts. Sellers such as Amazon and Woohoo offer it below face value. So you pay less for the card, and the jeweller still treats it as its full value at the counter.
There are three separate savings, and they come in this order:
- The store's own offer. A discount on making charges cuts the bill itself, and it is often the biggest saving. Settle this first.
- The gift card discount. This cuts what you pay for the money you hand over.
- Your credit card reward. This is 1% or 2% on what you pay for the gift card, but only if your bank pays on it and the seller still gives its discount. Many do not, as shown below.
Which gift card buys what: jewellery, coins and bars
This is where most people go wrong. Each jeweller sells several cards, and the name of the card decides what it can buy.
| Card | Buys | Will not buy | Lasts | Value of one card |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalyan Gold Jewellery | Any jewellery | Gold and silver coins | 364 days | ₹2,000 to ₹50,000 |
| Kalyan Gold Coin | All products, as its terms read | No product named; see the rules below | 364 days | ₹2,000 to ₹50,000 |
| Kalyan Diamond | Diamond, uncut, polki, platinum and solitaire jewellery | Gold and silver coins, and gold and silver jewellery | 364 days | ₹2,000 to ₹50,000 |
| Tanishq Gold Jewellery | Jewellery | Gold coins | 6 months | ₹500 to ₹1,99,999 |
| Tanishq Studded | Studded jewellery | Gold coins | 180 days | ₹500 to ₹1,99,999 |
| Reliance Jewels | Qualified products at Reliance Jewels stores | Gold and silver coins | 12 months | ₹250 to ₹10,000 |
- Tanishq's own gift card, sold on its website, is stricter than the table: it says the card works only against jewellery, and not for gold or silver coins or any other silver items. Amazon also lists a separate Tanishq Gold Coin card, valid for 6 months.
- Gold bars. None of these terms uses the word "bar". Kalyan's Gold Coin card is the one that reads "valid on all products". Its Gold Jewellery card refuses coins and says nothing on bars, so do not assume. Ask the store which card it will take before you buy one.
- The highest discount can be a trap. The Kalyan Diamond card shows the biggest number in the next table, but its terms rule out gold jewellery and coins completely.
How much discount is on offer
These are the rates listed on 4 November 2026. Note how Woohoo's rate depends on how you pay.
| Card | Amazon | Woohoo, by UPI | Woohoo, debit card | Woohoo, credit card |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kalyan Gold Jewellery | 4% coupon, once per user | 3.5% | 2.5% | None shown |
| Kalyan Gold Coin | 2% coupon, once per user | 2.5% | 1.5% | None shown |
| Kalyan Diamond | 6% | 7.5% | 6.5% | 5% |
| Tanishq Gold Jewellery | 2% coupon | 3% | 2% | 1% |
| Tanishq Studded | Not checked | 3.5% | 2.5% | None shown |
| Reliance Jewels | Not checked | None shown | None shown | None shown |
- "Once per user" limits the saving. Kalyan cards go up to ₹50,000, so a 4% coupon used once saves at most ₹2,000, not 4% of a large bill. Amazon's terms add that if a one-time coupon is used on several qualifying items, the discount applies only to the lowest priced one. So buy one large card with the coupon, not several small ones. Amazon also says not every customer is eligible for every offer, so check that the coupon shows on your account.
- Festival rates end. Amazon's 4% Kalyan coupon is a Diwali offer that expires on 11 November 2026, and quantities are limited. Rates also move during the year: Woohoo's list for Akshaya Tritiya in April 2026 showed the Kalyan Gold Coin card at 2.5% and a Tanishq Gold Coin card at 1.25%.
- Judge the card you can actually use. Discounts on plain gold run below diamond cards, so a big number on the wrong card saves you nothing.
Will your credit card add another 1% to 2%?
Only if two things are both true.
First, the seller must keep its discount on a credit card. On Woohoo it often does not. The Tanishq Gold Jewellery card drops from 3% on UPI to 1% on a credit card, and the Kalyan gold cards show no credit card offer at all. Amazon's coupon terms name no payment method, which is why that route pairs better with a card.
Second, your bank must pay rewards on the purchase. Banks decide this by the code the shop's payment machine sends, and many leave out jewellery, gift cards, or both. Here is what some of them say:
| Credit card | What the bank's terms say |
|---|---|
| SBI Cashback | No cashback on jewellery (merchant codes 5051, 5094, 7631 and 5944) or at card and gift shops (code 5947) |
| Amazon Pay ICICI | No reward points on buying gold, silver or any precious metal. The terms give 2% on physical gift cards and do not separately mention brand e-gift cards |
| Axis Select | No points on gold and jewellery, or on gift cards |
| Axis Privilege Easy | Gift cards earn no rewards and do not count towards the fee waiver or milestones |
| HDFC Swiggy | Jewellery and gift cards are excluded |
| SBI Tata Neu Infinity | Gift or prepaid card loads and voucher purchases are excluded |
| YES ACE | No reward points on jewellery from 15 June 2026 |
On this site's CardWise list, about one card in six leaves out gift cards, and about the same number leave out jewellery. A card that excludes jewellery may still pay on a gift card, and the other way round, because the two are coded differently. So read your own card's exclusions, or buy one small gift card first and see what appears on your statement.
A card tied to the brand can beat all of this. HDFC Bank's Tata Neu Infinity card gives 5% back as NeuCoins on non-EMI spends at partner Tata brands, and its terms list Tanishq. Its product page adds that Titan and Tanishq count only via Tata Neu, so check how the purchase must be made. NeuCoins are spent on Tata Neu and at partner brands; they are not cash. If you hold a card like this, compare it with the gift card route first.
Pay that card bill in full. Most cards charge about 3.75% a month on unpaid balances, so one month of interest takes away more than the whole saving. Our credit card interest calculator shows the cost.
A worked example: a ₹1 lakh gold jewellery bill at Kalyan
The bill is ₹1,00,000 after the store's offer, with GST included. The credit card pays 1%. Rates are those of 4 November 2026.
| Way of paying | You pay | Card reward | Your real cost | Saved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Credit card at the counter | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,000, if your bank pays on jewellery | ₹99,000 | ₹1,000 |
| Gift cards on Woohoo, by credit card (no offer shown) | ₹1,00,000 | ₹1,000, if your bank pays on gift cards | ₹99,000 | ₹1,000 |
| Gift cards on Woohoo, by UPI at 3.5% | ₹96,500 | None | ₹96,500 | ₹3,500 |
| One ₹50,000 card on Amazon at 4% by credit card, and ₹50,000 on Woohoo by UPI at 3.5% | ₹96,250 | ₹480 on the ₹48,000, if your bank pays | ₹95,770 | ₹4,230 |
Two more results from the same day. At Tanishq, UPI at 3% saves ₹3,000 on ₹1 lakh, while a credit card at 1% with a 1% reward saves ₹1,990, so UPI wins. For a coin or bar on the Kalyan Gold Coin card, UPI at 2.5% saves ₹2,500. The lesson is simple: a bigger discount by UPI usually beats a smaller discount plus card rewards.
How to do it, step by step
- Finish the deal first. Choose the piece, settle the making charge and any store offer, and get the final amount with GST.
- Ask two questions at the counter. Which gift card does this store accept for this item? And does my offer stay if I pay by gift card?
- Compare the rate for your way of paying. Check Amazon, Woohoo, GyFTR, CRED and Paytm, and look at the price on the final checkout page.
- Buy cards that add up to less than the bill. Delivery is usually instant, but the terms allow 24 to 72 hours, so do not leave it to the last minute. Keep each code and PIN private.
- Pay at the counter. Tell the cashier you are paying by gift card before billing starts. Pay any balance by UPI or card, and carry a photo ID.
- Keep the papers. Save the bill and the gift card receipts. On jewellery, check the hallmark and HUID as the gold buying guide explains.
The rules that catch people out
Kalyan's cards must be used in full. Tanishq's e-gift cards work once, and any unused balance is not refunded. Reliance Jewels cards cannot be used in parts. A ₹50,000 card on a ₹48,000 bill loses ₹2,000.
Tanishq cards last 6 months, Kalyan cards 364 days and Reliance Jewels cards 12 months. None can be extended. A card holds rupees, not grams, so the gold you can buy with it moves with the price.
Kalyan's cards cannot be combined with advance purchase schemes, package invoices or special-priced items. Some Amazon reviewers say a store refused its discount on a gift card payment. Mine was honoured; yours must be confirmed first.
Kalyan's terms allow up to 10 cards on one bill, or ₹5 lakh at ₹50,000 each. Reliance Jewels allows several on one bill but caps each card at ₹10,000.
Tanishq's terms say participating showrooms, and Reliance's say listed outlets. Its card does not work online. Do not assume every store takes every card; call ahead.
Lost or stolen cards are not replaced, and sellers do not take them back. Buy only from the brand or a known seller. A big discount offered on Telegram or WhatsApp can be a used code or fraud money, and that can lead to a frozen bank account.
GST, PAN and tax: what changes and what does not
- GST. There is no GST on buying the gift card. CBIC's Circular 243/37/2024-GST says transactions in vouchers are neither a supply of goods nor of services. GST falls on what you buy with it, so the jeweller still charges 3% on the full bill. The gift card discount does not reduce that GST.
- PAN. Rule 159 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026 requires PAN for a purchase of goods above ₹2 lakh per transaction, however you pay. Paying by gift card does not change this, and the jeweller will ask for it.
- Who regulates the card. RBI describes a card usable only at the company that issued it as a closed system PPI, and says these are not regulated or supervised by RBI. RBI's ₹10,000 cap on gift instruments applies to the PPIs it authorises, which appears to be why jewellers' cards can be far larger. So take a dispute first to the seller, then the brand, then the National Consumer Helpline (1915).
- Income tax. A discount on something you buy for yourself is a lower price, not income. If you sell the gold later, the gain is worked out on what the gold cost you, so keep the gift card receipts with the bill. Gold held for more than 24 months is taxed at 12.5%; the Diwali tax guide covers this, and gifts of cards and vouchers too.
When it is not worth the trouble
- The store's offer is bigger and goes away. If paying by gift card cancels a making charge discount, the discount usually matters more. Keep the store's offer.
- You are not buying soon. Your money sits in a card that earns nothing, cannot be refunded and has an expiry date.
- The bill is small. On ₹10,000, a 3% saving is ₹300. Decide if that is worth the steps and the risk of a leftover balance.
- You would pay the card bill late. Interest at about 3.75% a month is more than the discount.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I buy gold coins with a Tanishq gift card? Not with its jewellery cards. Tanishq's own card and its gold jewellery and studded e-gift cards all exclude gold coins. Amazon lists a separate Tanishq Gold Coin card; check its terms before you buy.
Can I buy a gold bar with a gift card at Kalyan? Kalyan's Gold Coin card reads "valid on all products", and I paid for a bar at Kalyan using a gift card. The terms do not name bars, so ask the store which card it will accept before you buy one.
Will I still get the making charge discount if I pay by gift card? Often yes, but it is not guaranteed. SBI Card's catalogue says Kalyan and Tanishq vouchers can be used with ongoing offers, yet Kalyan's terms bar package invoices and special-priced items. Confirm at the counter before billing.
Can I use several gift cards, and pay the balance by card or UPI? Yes. Kalyan's terms allow up to 10 cards on a bill, and Amazon's listing says any balance can be paid by another mode at the store. Reliance Jewels also allows several cards on a bill.
Do I get credit card cashback on a gift card? It depends on your bank and on the seller. Many banks exclude gift cards, jewellery or both, and Woohoo often cuts its discount for credit cards. Check your card's exclusions, or test with one small card.
Is there GST on a gift card? No. GST applies when the card is used, on the goods you buy. The jeweller charges 3% on the bill as usual.
What happens if my gift card expires? You lose the value. The terms say the cards cannot be revalidated or refunded, so buy close to the date you will use them.
