Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. The stock market opens that afternoon for Muhurat trading, 2:20 to 3:30 pm, and shuts on Tuesday 10 November for Balipratipada. Banks close on different days in different cities: Mumbai and Ahmedabad on the 10th, Lucknow and Kanpur on the 9th and 11th, Delhi not at all that week. Every date from NSE, MCX and RBI, a pick-your-city calendar, when your trades settle, and the tax and GST dates that fall in between.
Diwali this year falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. The stock market opens that afternoon for an hour and ten minutes of Muhurat trading, is shut on Tuesday 10 November, and banks close on different days depending on the city you live in. Money that moves by UPI or NEFT does not stop at all; a cheque or a branch visit does. Here is the whole fortnight in one place, with every date taken from NSE, MCX and the Reserve Bank's own lists, and a calendar below that shows your city.
Written on 20 October 2026. Stock market dates are from NSE's 2026 holiday list and its Muhurat circular of 19 October 2026; commodity dates from MCX's holiday list as on 16 October; bank holidays from RBI's holiday list for November 2026, by RBI office; payment systems from RBI's NEFT and RTGS FAQs. Due dates are this site's reviewed compliance calendar.
Fri 6 Nov — Dhanteras, a normal trading and banking day · Sat 7 Nov — TDS for October is due; banks are open (first Saturday) · Sun 8 Nov — Diwali; Muhurat trading 2:20 to 3:30 pm · Tue 10 Nov — stock market holiday; banks shut in Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Bengaluru · Wed 11 Nov — Bhai Dooj; GSTR-1 due · Mon 16 Nov — Chhath; banks shut in Patna and Ranchi.
Is the stock market open in Diwali week?
On most days, yes. NSE's 2026 holiday list has two Diwali entries: Sunday 8 November, Diwali Laxmi Pujan, when the market opens specially for Muhurat trading, and Tuesday 10 November, Diwali Balipratipada, a full holiday. BSE publishes its own list; check it if you trade there. Today, Tuesday 20 October, the market is shut for Dussehra.
| Date | Shares and F&O (NSE) | Commodities (MCX) | Mutual fund NAV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tue 20 Oct (Dussehra) | Closed | Morning closed, evening open | No NAV |
| Fri 6 Nov (Dhanteras) | Open | Open | Normal |
| Sun 8 Nov (Diwali) | Muhurat trading, 2:20 to 3:30 pm | Muhurat session; MCX to announce timings | No NAV |
| Mon 9 Nov | Open | Open | Normal |
| Tue 10 Nov (Balipratipada) | Closed | Morning closed, evening open | No NAV |
| Wed 11 Nov (Bhai Dooj) | Open | Open | Normal |
| Tue 24 Nov (Guru Nanak Jayanti) | Closed | Morning closed, evening open | No NAV |
The mutual fund column follows NSE's list for its mutual fund segment, which has the same three holidays. Money you invest on a holiday is processed on the next business day and gets that day's NAV.
Muhurat trading timings: Sunday 8 November
Muhurat trading is a short, auspicious session on Diwali evening that marks the start of the new Samvat year, 2083. NSE's circular of 19 October 2026 sets the equity session as follows:
| Session | Time |
|---|---|
| Block deal window | 1:50 to 2:05 pm |
| Pre-open: placing and changing orders | 2:05 to 2:15 pm (only limit orders after 2:10; random close in the last 2 minutes) |
| Pre-open: matching, then buffer | 2:15 to 2:20 pm |
| Normal trading | 2:20 to 3:30 pm |
| Closing auction (only stocks in the closing-auction list) | Normal market ends 3:15 pm; auction orders 3:20 to 3:30 pm; matching 3:30 to 3:35 pm |
| Post-close session | 3:50 to 4:00 pm |
NSE's futures and options and commodity segments run the same window: normal trading from 2:20 to 3:30 pm. MCX has said Muhurat trading will be held on 8 November and that it will announce its timings separately. BSE announces its own session; check its notice for the exact minutes.
Three things to know before you trade in it:
- It is a real session. NSE's circular says every trade "shall result in settlement obligations". A buy is a buy, and margins apply as on any other day.
- It settles on Monday. Under the T+1 cycle a trade settles on the next clearing day. Monday 9 November is one, so shares bought in Muhurat trading should reach your demat account on Monday. Your contract note shows the exact date.
- The tax is the usual tax. Delivery purchases are capital assets: sold within 12 months, the gain is taxed at 20% plus cess; after 12 months, at 12.5% on gains above ₹1.25 lakh a year. Intraday trades are speculative business income, taxed at your slab rate. Securities transaction tax and charges apply as on any day. The capital gains calculator works out your year.
When will my trades settle in Diwali week?
NSE's clearing-holiday list for November has only one day in the festive week: Tuesday 10 November. So a trade made on a day before it settles one clearing day later, skipping weekends and the 10th:
| You trade on | It settles on (T+1) |
|---|---|
| Fri 6 Nov | Mon 9 Nov |
| Sun 8 Nov (Muhurat) | Mon 9 Nov |
| Mon 9 Nov | Wed 11 Nov |
| Wed 11 Nov | Thu 12 Nov |
| Fri 13 Nov | Mon 16 Nov |
If you are selling to raise cash for a Diwali purchase, a sale on Friday 6 November settles on Monday the 9th; a sale on Monday the 9th settles only on Wednesday the 11th. Your broker then pays the money to your bank on its own schedule.
Bank holidays in Diwali week, by city
Bank holidays are fixed state by state under the Negotiable Instruments Act, so Diwali closes banks on different days in different places. RBI's list for November 2026, by RBI office, has these days in the festive fortnight. Sunday 8 November, Diwali itself, is a Sunday and a bank holiday everywhere; Saturday 14 November is the second Saturday and a holiday everywhere. Saturday 7 November is a normal working day.
| Date | Holiday (RBI's description) | Banks closed in |
|---|---|---|
| Mon 9 Nov | Diwali / Laxmi Puja / Govardhan Puja / Vishwakarma Day | Agartala, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Gangtok, Imphal, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow |
| Tue 10 Nov | Diwali (Bali Pratipada) / Govardhan Puja / Vikram Samvat New Year | Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Dehradun, Gangtok, Mumbai, Nagpur |

Not on this list for the festive week: Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kochi, Panaji, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada, among others, where banks keep their normal days apart from Sunday 8 and Saturday 14 November. Gangtok has the longest break: the 9th, 10th and 11th.

Does UPI work on Diwali? Payments, cheques and ATMs

- NEFT and RTGS too: RBI's FAQs say NEFT is available "24x7x365", and RTGS has been round the clock since 14 December 2020. A transfer on Diwali goes through on Diwali.
- Cheques clear only on days the banks in the clearing city are open. In Mumbai nothing clears on Sunday 8 or Tuesday 10 November; in Lucknow, nothing from the 8th to the 11th except Tuesday the 10th.
- Branches are shut on their holidays; ATMs and net banking work. If you need a branch for cash or a draft, Saturday 7 November is open everywhere.
