Agniveer Two-Year Extension: Pay, Seva Nidhi, Tax and the Road to a Regular Job
Three of every four Agniveers were due to leave after four years. The Cabinet has now offered them two more years, then a chance at a regular job. The official release gives no rupee figures, so here is what is confirmed, what has only been reported, what Seva Nidhi may come to after six years, how it is taxed, and a catch in the age limits that few people have noticed.
Until this week, three of every four Agniveers were due to leave the forces after four years, with a lump sum and no pension. On 4 November 2026 the Cabinet changed that. Those not picked for regular service can now stay two more years, and then try for a permanent place. The first batch was due out from 21 November, so the choice is close for many families. The official note is short and gives no rupee figures. Here is what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what the money may look like.
Written on 5 November 2026. The official text is the PIB release of 4 November. The pay figures come from press reports of the Chief of Defence Staff's briefing. I found no government order setting out the new terms. Figures marked as estimates are my own and will change when the order comes.
Official: two more years for the willing 75% · After six years: regular enrolment, if you are willing and meet the selection criteria · Reported pay: ₹43,500 a month, then ₹47,500 · Seva Nidhi: "enhanced", with no amount published · Tax: the payout stays exempt · The catch: two more years can take you past the age limit for the central police quota
What the Cabinet decided
The Agnipath scheme continues, and the first four years do not change. What is new is a second engagement period. It helps to separate what the government has written from what has only been said at a briefing.
| Point | Status |
|---|---|
| 25% still offered regular service on merit after four years | Official (PIB) |
| The remaining 75% offered two more years, if they are willing | Official (PIB) |
| After that, enrolment as regular soldiers if willing and selected | Official (PIB) |
| Higher pay, an enhanced Seva Nidhi and seniority benefits in the second period | Official (PIB), with no figures |
| Pay of ₹43,500, then ₹47,500 a month | Reported from the briefing. Two reports say ₹47,000 for the second year |
| Government's Seva Nidhi share rises to 70% | Reported, not in the PIB release |
| Navy batch ends 21 November, Air Force 21 December, Army 31 December | Reported; more than 18,300 people are due out by 31 December |
| Selection criteria, and any cap on numbers | Not published |
The word that matters is "subject to". The release speaks of a pathway for all Agniveers, but enrolment depends on meeting selection criteria that have not been published. It is an opportunity, not a guarantee.
The pay, year by year
The first four years are from the 2022 Cabinet release. Risk and hardship allowances are extra. Years five and six are the reported figures. The take-home columns for those two years assume the same 30% deduction continues, which nobody has confirmed.
| Year | Monthly package | In hand (70%) | Into the Corpus Fund (30%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₹30,000 | ₹21,000 | ₹9,000 |
| 2 | ₹33,000 | ₹23,100 | ₹9,900 |
| 3 | ₹36,500 | ₹25,580 | ₹10,950 |
| 4 | ₹40,000 | ₹28,000 | ₹12,000 |
| 5 (reported) | ₹43,500 | About ₹30,450 | About ₹13,050 |
| 6 (reported) | ₹47,500 | About ₹33,250 | About ₹14,250 |
Over four years the package adds up to ₹16.74 lakh. Over six it comes to about ₹27.66 lakh. Two more years add about ₹10.92 lakh, a good part of it paid into the fund rather than to you each month.
How much Seva Nidhi after six years?
Seva Nidhi is the lump sum paid on leaving. You put in 30% of your package, the government matches it, and the fund earns the PPF rate, now 7.1%. After four years, that makes ₹10.04 lakh of contributions and about ₹11.71 lakh with interest, the government's own figure.
For six years there is no official figure yet. Here are two estimates, based on the reported pay. The first assumes the equal match simply continues. The second assumes the reported 70% applies to the government's share of the contributions in years five and six.
| Case | Your contributions | Government's | Total before interest | With interest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leave after 4 years (official) | ₹5.02 lakh | ₹5.02 lakh | ₹10.04 lakh | About ₹11.71 lakh |
| Leave after 6 years, equal match (estimate) | ₹8.30 lakh | ₹8.30 lakh | ₹16.60 lakh | About ₹20 lakh |
| Leave after 6 years, 70% share on years 5–6 (estimate) | ₹8.30 lakh | ₹12.67 lakh | ₹20.96 lakh | About ₹25 lakh |
The estimates assume the 7.1% rate holds and the money stays in the fund for all six years. The real figure could differ, and the reports do not say exactly how the 70% is worked out.
Who gets only half. This is the rule most people miss. Under the Defence Ministry's order of 29 December 2022, someone selected for regular service gets only their own contribution with interest. The government's matching share goes to the Consolidated Fund of India. So the 25% picked at four years receive about half the Seva Nidhi, in exchange for a career with pension rules. The same applies to anyone who leaves early. On death or on discharge for disability, the full balance is paid. Nobody has yet said what happens to an Agniveer enrolled as a regular soldier after six years.
The three paths at the four-year mark
At least 15 more years on regular terms. Pay and pension follow those rules. You receive your own share of the Seva Nidhi, not the government's.
About ₹11.71 lakh, tax-free, with no pension or gratuity. You can use the Ex-Agniveer quota in central police forces, within its age limits.
Higher pay, a larger Seva Nidhi and a chance at regular service, subject to selection. The catch is your age when you leave, if you are not selected.
The age limit catch
Few reports have looked at this. Ex-Agniveers have a strong route into the central police forces: 50% of Constable (General Duty) vacancies are reserved for them, with no written test and no physical tests. But the route has an age limit. The usual upper limit is 23. Ex-Agniveers get 3 more years, and the first batch gets 5.
| Joined at 21 | Age after 4 years | Age after 6 years | Upper age limit | After 6 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First batch | 25 | 27 | 28 | Inside the limit |
| Later batches | 25 | 27 | 26 | Past the limit |
So a later-batch Agniveer who joined at 20 or older reaches the limit at around the time the six years end, or passes it. If such a person serves six years and is not selected, the quota may be out of reach on today's rules. Nobody has said these limits will stay as they are, and the Home Ministry may well revise them to fit a six-year term. Until it does, check your own date of birth against the limit before you decide. State police quotas have their own rules.
The tax position
| Item | Tax | Where the rule is |
|---|---|---|
| Seva Nidhi payout from the Corpus Fund, to you or your nominee | Exempt, with no limit | Income-tax Act, 2025, Schedule II, item 7 |
| Monthly package and allowances | Taxable as salary | Section 15 |
| Government's contribution to the fund | Counted in your salary, then deducted in full, in both regimes | Sections 16, 125(2) and 202 |
| Your own 30% contribution | Deductible in the old regime only | Sections 125(1) and 202 |
| Interest on the lump sum after you invest it | Taxable in the normal way | Depends on the investment |
In practice, the salary is unlikely to be taxed. Even the reported year-six package comes to ₹5.70 lakh a year, well under the ₹12 lakh of income on which the new regime's rebate leaves no tax. Allowances add to that, but not by enough to matter for most people. One point to watch: section 125 defines the scheme by the Defence Ministry's letter of 29 December 2022. The release says the scheme continues, so I expect the second period to be covered, but the new order or a clarification should confirm it.
What is still not known
- The new Seva Nidhi amount, and how the reported 70% works.
- When the first four years' money is paid: at four years, or only at the end of six.
- The selection criteria, and whether numbers will be capped.
- What a regular soldier keeps if enrolled after six years: the full Seva Nidhi, or only their own share.
- Seniority and pension: whether the first years count, and how far.
- The ₹48 lakh life cover and death and disability terms in the second period.
- The age limits for the police quota after six years.
If you or your child is an Agniveer
- Wait for the written terms if you can. Your unit will tell you how and by when to opt in. Do not rely on social media figures.
- Get your Corpus Fund statement. Know your own balance before comparing anything.
- Check your age. Work out your age on the day you would leave, against the limit for the job you have in mind.
- Compare the two choices side by side. Two years of pay and a larger lump sum on one side; a job search that starts two years sooner on the other.
- Update your nominee. It costs nothing, and the fund pays the nominee in full on death.
- Plan the lump sum before it arrives. It is tax-free, but what it earns afterwards is not. The FD, RD and Post Office calculator shows what different deposits would pay.
